Our Providers

Dr Nelson Smith is board certified in Internal Medicine.  He is an Apopka native and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Central Florida with a BS in Microbiology.  He received his medical degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa, graduating in the top 10% of his class achieving membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr Smith completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the Medical College of Georgia and was nominated to be the Chief Resident, finishing at the top of his class. Dr Smith practiced in both the office and the hospital at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and was the Director of Hospital Medicine at Mease Countryside and Dunedin Hospitals in the Baycare System.  A desire to teach led him to Wake Forest University where he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine and to Cape Coral Hospital as an Assistant Professor with the FSU associated residency there.

Dr Smith is a distinguished graduate of the USAF Flight Surgeon School in San Antonio and recently retired from 24 years as an Air Force Reserve Combat Search and Rescue Flight Surgeon with 7 combat deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia as part of the 920th Rescue Wing Pararescue unit.

Dr Smith is happy to return to his roots in Central Florida to provide evidence based and patient centered Internal Medicine care. He is a member of the American Medical Association, The Society of Hospital Medicine, and the American College of Physicians. In his spare time, he enjoys flying as a private pilot, SCUBA diving, boating, golf, and tennis. He is accepting new patients at our Mt. Dora office.
